Garmin Approach R10

The Approach R10 is Garmin’s portable radar launch monitor for home, backyard or range use. It pairs with the Garmin Golf app on your phone over Bluetooth.

  • In the box: the R10, a tripod stand, phone mount, carry case, microUSB cable and documentation.

Garmin Approach G82

The Approach G82 is mainly a premium GPS golf handheld (5-inch touchscreen, 43,000 preloaded courses) that comes with a radar stand. As a launch monitor it measures club head speed, ball speed, smash factor and estimated distance, plus putting ball speed, club speed, tempo and stroke length. It supports range target practice, putting training and bag mapping. Battery life is up to 25 hours in GPS mode or 8 hours in radar mode.

Home Tee Hero and the Garmin Golf Membership

Virtual rounds on Garmin launch monitors run through Home Tee Hero, which needs an active Garmin Golf membership. Garmin lists a monthly plan at $9.99 and an annual plan at $99.99. The membership enables premium features, including the interactive simulator experience with a compatible launch monitor. Weekly leaderboard tournaments also need a subscription.

Without a membership, the R50 and R10 still give you shot data, the driving range and practice features through the device or the Garmin Golf app.

Studio Packages

Garmin offers an Approach R50 Complete Studio Package and an Approach R10 Complete Studio Package, both sold through Playbetter. Garmin describes them as all-inclusive packages in four sizes, including the enclosure, impact screen, projector, hitting and landing mats, side barriers and a ball tray, with optional professional setup and installation.

Is Garmin Right for You?

From Garmin’s own specifications, the R10 suits golfers who want a low-cost radar unit they can carry to the range and use with a phone, while the R50 suits golfers who want an all-in-one camera simulator with its own screen and no separate PC. Either way, budget for the Garmin Golf membership if you want virtual rounds.
