About aboutGolf
aboutGolf traces its roots to Friendly Software, whose 2D DOS golf game became Greg Norman’s Ultimate Challenge Golf in 1996. Its success led to World Tours Golf, with 3D design and online events. After several other brands tried to license the software for their simulators, aboutGolf was formed from Friendly Software to bring that graphics and design work to the simulator industry.
aboutGolf says it saw the limits of radar indoors and moved to machine-vision tracking. It debuted 3Trak at the 2008 PGA Show, which it describes as the first technology in the industry to truly measure speed, angles and spin rates. Later came the aG Locker app and the 3Trak iSU 2.0. aboutGolf describes “30+ years of being trusted by the best” and more than two decades of building custom simulators.
Its stated mission is to make golf more accessible to experienced and new golfers at every skill and income level, starting from ideas such as “golf takes too long” and “golf is too expensive”. aboutGolf partners with instructor and TV host Michael Breed, whose MB360 Range is built into its software.
How 3Trak Measures a Shot
The 3Trak is a ceiling-mounted machine-vision launch monitor. Each unit records the point of impact through a series of high-speed camera images and captures the ball’s 3D vector, which aboutGolf says lets it project accurate shot shapes even for high launch angles and slow ball speeds, so putts and chips behave as they would outdoors. aboutGolf argues that radar is powerful outside but unreliable indoors, because things like fans and air-conditioning can interfere, which is why it builds camera systems specifically for indoor use.
Data aboutGolf lists: ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, total distance, backspin, sidespin, rifle spin, distance offline, smash factor, club speed, vertical and horizontal angle of attack, and centredness of contact.
